Trim Levels – Exterior
There are five primary trim levels for the 2016 Volkswagen Passat: the S, R-Line, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. As the base model, the S trim pricing begins at $22,440. Get distinctive exterior styling and 19-inch alloy wheels on the R-Line starting at $23,975. With an initial price of $26,280, the SE brings the driver perks like a sunroof and a touchscreen-connected sound system. For leather seating, larger wheels, and a premium audio setup, opt for the SEL at $30,495. The top-of-line SEL Premium has all the features of lower trims and adds remote start along with other upgrades.
The Passat's exterior has a few new flourishes such as a domed hood, newly-placed headlights, and chrome trim around the windows. The SEL Premium package includes LED headlights and tail lights. The distinctive Volkswagen brand symbol earns a prominent spot on the front fascia.
Engine – Power
There are two engines available on the 2016 Passat: the turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6 engine. The V6 is available exclusively on the SEL Premium.
Capable of producing up to 170 horsepower (hp) and 184 lb-ft of torque, the four-cylinder turbo engine is powerful enough to go from zero to 60 in 7.7 seconds. It offers 29 miles to the gallon combined fuel efficiency, according to EPA estimates.
For the V6, it maxes out at 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. In terms of fuel economy, it gets up to 23 mpg with city and highway estimates combined.
Performance
While both engines offer fast acceleration, third-party evaluations showed markedly stronger performance from the V6 engine. With its ability to smooth out the roughest of highways, the Passat promises a smooth, enjoyable ride on the open road. Precise steering and a relaxed feel makes driving the Passat a real pleasure, whether it's around town or across the country.
Interior
Thanks to its spacious interior, the Passat makes even the tallest passengers feel as if they have adequate leg room. The back seats fold down in a 60/40 split to augment the nearly 16 cubic feet of trunk space.
The enhanced on-board audio system and touch-screen interface earn high marks for having an intuitive design and quick response to inputs. The audio system includes six speakers and higher trims benefit from a premium Fender audio package.
Safety Features
Boasting a perfect score on government safety tests, the Passat comes with standard protective measures such as stability control, a rearview camera, air bags, and antilock disc brakes. On upper trims, you have access to high-tech safety features such as rear cross-traffic warnings, blind-spot monitoring, and a front crash mitigation system.
Included with the SE and higher trims, the Car-Net telematics package automatically alerts emergency responders when there's a crash. It also enables parents to use geo-fencing to manage a young driver's routes.
