Both models have their highlights, but the newly redesigned Passat offers stronger performance, more standard features, and a better warranty than the soon-to-be-discontinued Fusion.
Age and freshness
The Volkswagen Passat boasts an all-new design for the 2020 model year. The exterior and interior have both been extensively restyled, and the infotainment system has been upgraded as well. Meanwhile, the Ford Fusion will no longer be offered after this year — and it hasn’t received a thorough update since 2013, leaving it with a tired and outdated look compared to the fresher, sportier Passat.
Power and efficiency
You can count on superior responsiveness and fuel efficiency when you drive the 2020 Volkswagen Passat. The Passat’s standard 2.0-liter turbo engine puts out 174 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque while getting 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.* The Ford Fusion’s base 2.5-liter engine gets marginally better horsepower at 175, but lags far behind on torque (only 175 lb-ft). At 21 city mpg and 31 highway mpg, its fuel-economy numbers trail the Passat as well.
Standard features
Even on its base S trim, the VW Passat is loaded with a generous 50 standard features. On the exterior, the Passat presents LED headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights; heated side mirrors with memory; and 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels. Inside, the 6.3-inch App-Connect infotainment system runs both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. If you opt for the entry-level Ford Fusion S, you won’t get any of these features —so you will end up paying more to add them.
Warranty coverage
When you buy the VW Passat, you can count on a longer warranty coverage period compared to the Ford Fusion. The Passat’s basic warranty (which includes the powertrain) lasts for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The Fusion’s basic warranty is only good for three years or 36,000 miles.
